Search titles

Search titles are the most load-bearing setting in Rolehound. With none set, nothing is searched and nothing is found.

Where they are

The Search tab, in the Search preferences card. Type a title into Search titles, then choose Add or press Enter, and it appears as a chip below. Each chip has a close button to remove it. Choose Save to apply.

You can have up to six. At six, the field disables itself and says Maximum of 6 search titles.

When you first import a CV, the target titles read out of it are copied in for you, so this is usually a case of checking them rather than starting from a blank field.

What they drive

Two things, and the second one surprises people.

Each title becomes its own keyword search against the job-board aggregator. Six titles means six searches per run.

And every posting from a company you follow on the Watchlist has to match one of your titles before it reaches you. Following a company does not bypass this.

That watchlist match is not an exact one. A title matches if either string contains the other, ignoring case — so Solutions Architect matches a posting for Senior Solutions Architect, and a title of Engineer matches almost every engineering posting a company has open.

Choosing them

Too broad and you pay for it twice. A title like Manager pulls back a great deal of loosely related work, and every one of those roles is then scored — and scoring is a metered AI call against your credit. A list full of near-misses is also a list you stop reading, which costs you more than the credit does.

Too specific and the role never reaches you at all. Employers name the same job half a dozen ways, and a search only finds the words you gave it. If your own job title is unusual inside your company, search the common name for the work instead.

The shape that works is two or three plain, widely-used titles at the level you want, plus one or two adjacent ones. Put the level in the title where the level matters — Head of Engineering rather than Engineering. And if a title is consistently bringing back nothing you want, drop it. Six is a ceiling, not a target.

Turning searching off

The Search enabled switch on the same card stops searching for the whole account without clearing your titles. With it off, no run does anything for you.

When changes take effect

From the next run onwards. Nothing is searched retrospectively, so a posting that is still live will be picked up under a new title, and one that has since been taken down will not.
