Rolehound

The Rolehound folders in your mailbox

Once Rolehound has decided what a message is, it files it out of your inbox into a folder named for that decision. The folders sit under a single parent called Rolehound in your own mailbox, and each is created the first time it is needed.

The seven folders

  • Rolehound/Acknowledgement — a received-your-application message.
  • Rolehound/Response — a real reply that is not yet an invitation.
  • Rolehound/InterviewInvite — an invitation to talk.
  • Rolehound/Offer — an offer.
  • Rolehound/Rejection — a rejection.
  • Rolehound/JobAlert — an alert from a job board, which is then read for the roles inside it.
  • Rolehound/Irrelevant — everything else.

That last one is the one to think about before connecting. Every message that gets classified gets filed, so mail with nothing to do with your job search is moved out of your inbox and into Rolehound/Irrelevant. It is not deleted and it is not hidden — it is an ordinary folder in your mailbox and your mail client will show it like any other — but your inbox will be emptier than you were expecting.

Mail filed before the rename

If you connected your mailbox before Hunter became Rolehound, older messages stay in the Hunter folders they were filed into. Rolehound leaves them where they are.

How the move is done

Two ways, depending on what your mail server supports.

Where the server offers the IMAP move command, the message is relocated in a single server-side operation.

Where it does not, Rolehound copies the message into the target folder, waits for that copy to come back confirmed, and only then flags the original and expunges it. The expunge only ever runs after a confirmed copy. If the copy fails, nothing is flagged and nothing is expunged: the message stays where it is, and the failure goes into the server log rather than onto any page you can see, so all you would notice is a message that did not move.

There is no delete path and no trash path anywhere in this. The interface Rolehound uses to speak to your mailbox exposes no such operation at all, so no amount of going wrong can produce one.

A message it could not classify is left alone entirely, still in your inbox, to be tried again on a later run.

Reading what was filed

You do not have to go into your mail client to follow any of this. The Inbox page in Rolehound lists the messages it has classified, each with the folder it went to, what Rolehound decided it meant, and which application it was matched to. For a job alert it also shows the roles that came out of it.

What happens to the matched ones is covered in how a reply advances a card.
