Rolehound

Using your own API key

If you already hold an account with an AI provider, you can run Rolehound's AI work on your own key instead of ours. Nothing is then metered and nothing comes off your credit: your provider bills you directly for what you use, on your own terms with them.

Adding a key

Open Billing and find the Bring your own API key card. Choose the provider, paste the key into the field beside it, and press Save.

The key is checked against that provider before anything is stored. If the check fails the page tells you and nothing is saved — which usually means the key is mistyped, has been revoked, or belongs to a different provider from the one selected in the box.

Once it is accepted, the card changes to say a key of that provider is set, and offers a Clear button instead of the field. The key itself is never shown back to you, not even partly.

What changes

Every AI call runs on your key from that moment: extraction, scoring, classification and drafting alike. None of them are metered, no usage rows are written for them, and your credit balance stays exactly where it is. The out-of-credit warning stops appearing too, because a zero balance no longer stops anything.

Your subscription is unaffected. It pays for the platform, which is not the part your key replaces.

How it is stored

Encrypted before it is written, never shown back to you, and never written to a log. The security page sets out plainly what that encryption does and does not protect it from — it is the same disclosure as the one about your mailbox secret, and worth reading before you paste anything in.

Removing it

Press Clear on the same card. The stored key is deleted and the provider setting goes back to its default in the same action, so a cleared key cannot leave a stale provider behind it. AI calls go back to running on Rolehound's key and being charged against your credit, so check the balance is not sitting at zero before you clear it.

Revoking the key at the provider is a separate step, and one worth taking if you are clearing it because it may have been exposed.
